Toyota Plans To Maintain Lead Over GM In 2008

The battle between the two big names in the auto industry just keeps on getting exciting as ever. It’s like a hot radiator ready to burst anytime! Toyota and GM, both successful in the past years, has taken the rivalry into the next level.

According to The Auto Channel, Chang-Ran Kim, a writer for Reuters, reported that the Toyota Motor Corp. will blast off further into rising car markets to attain another successful year of record sales for the coming year. Toyota aims to stay on top as the world's prime automaker in front of General Motors Corp.

The Japanese car manufacturer is the world's most gainful and valuable carmaker by now. It is projected that it will sell 9.85 million vehicles in 2008 - way beyond the estimated 9.36 million this year.

"The Chinese market has undergone a significant change during the year," President Katsuaki Watanabe told a year-end news conference.

"At the beginning of the year, we wondered if the total auto market would reach 8 million, and by mid-year we were looking at 8.5 million. Now it's possible the market will exceed 9 million," he said. "We need to figure out how to meet demand."

Panasonic Toyota’s Tests In Jerez

Panasonic Toyota is aggressively working things out for the 2008 season. With several alterations in their team, Jarno Trulli and the rest of the team are all set to face the odds in the upcoming 2008 Formula One World Championship and wish to have a great season ahead.

According to Motor Sport, Panasonic Toyota Racing concluded the 2007 season with the final test of the year at Jerez in Spain several days ago."We tried to achieve many things today so it was quite busy for me. I used the new slick tyres and they gave a lot more grip and were pretty consistent. We also tried the tyres with 2009 levels of downforce which was quite different and a bit tricky. It was not easy to understand everything because we tried so many different things during the day,” says Jarno Trulli.

"We collected a lot of data and now we must study that and figure out the solution. We tried to do as many laps as possible, which was our main target in order to put mileage on the new rear end and 2008 ECU,” added Trulli.

"That was a successful day and we completed the programme without any issues. We have used up our entire annual allocation of kilometres and Bridgestone Potenza tyres so we can be pleased with that. It was interesting to see Jarno driving on slick tyres today. He is one of the few drivers here this week to have previous experience of Formula 1 slick tyres and his feedback has been very helpful," says Chief Engineer Dieter Gass.

"We have been looking ahead to 2009 more today with the slick tyres and reduced downforce levels and we can be pleased with our progress. Timo has once again given good input into set-up development, including using the slick tyres again. It has been a pleasure having him in the car this week and he has made a strong contribution already to our development,” added Gass.

Toyota Tops J.D. Power and Associates Survey in Customer Retention

Despite the bad publicities hurdled at Toyota it didn’t stop new and loyal customers from visiting Toyota dealers to purchase Toyota vehicles. As a matter of fact the result of the survey conducted by J.D. Power & Associates shows that Toyota has once again led all automakers in terms of customer retention.

Toyota has posted 65% of Toyota’s buyers last year has traded a Toyota for a new one. Coming in second place is Toyota’s luxury division Lexus with 63% followed by Honda Motor, the producer of high quality Acura headers with 62.8%.

Neal Oddes, director of product research and analysis at J.D. Power said, "Toyota's high customer retention rate is particularly notable, considering that new-vehicle sales have declined in the past year. Toyota maintains its high retention rates by providing high-quality vehicles and service to its existing customers, which in turn generates favorable word-of-mouth recommendations that attract new customers."

Toyota’s customer retention is quite impressive considering that the overall average obtained by the industry is only 49% with the highest US nameplate Chevrolet obtaining 56% attributed to the high loyalty rate among buyers of Chevy pickups and large sport-utility vehicles such as the Suburban. Ford Motor has also obtained 53% of which a great deal was attributed to the pickup business.

The brands that score poorly on the survey include Mini, Isuzu Motors, Pontiac, Jaguar and Land Rover.

BMW has topped European brands in terms of customer loyalty at 58% while Mercedes-Benz comes in second place with 57% followed by prosche with 42%, Audi with 41%, Saab at 34%, and Volvo and Volkswagen both with 33%. The weakness of the US dollar against the Euro has made it harder for European brands to retain customers.

Toyota and Its Violin-Playing Robot

Toyota not to be outdone by Honda--the producer of quality Acura distributor cap and creator of the ASIMO robot—in the field of robotics has also released a human-sized robot that can play the violin.

The Toyota robot has performed a full rendition of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance. A video of the robot may be viewed on YouTube.

According to Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe in an interview with The Guardian, "Over the next two to three years, we will put the robots to the test through trial applications and see what kind of business possibilities they present."

Mr. Watanabe also said that by 2020 robotics will become an important part of the company as a matter of fact next year Toyota will reveal medical robots, and also plans of producing what they call as “partner robots” that are designed for domestic duties, nursing, healthcare and short-distance personal transport by 2010.

Toyota has also introduced Robina, which is a wheeled robot with a human torso it was made to perform as working guide at Toyota’s showroom in Tokyo for the past year, and is programmed to answer questions and sign autographs.

Another robot by the name of Mobina was introduced which is a two-wheeled 4mph motorized wheelchair that can navigate a variety of surfaces for 13 miles between charges. Toyota also plans of producing another version but this time one that can act as a porter.

Toyota is venturing in the filed of robotics since there is a high demand for robots in Japan especially in domestic and medical fields.

The Launch of Toyota’s Used Car Division

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has recently announced the launch of the company’s used car division. It will be under the brand name ‘Toyota U Trust’.

The unit will be facilitating sales, purchase and exchange of Toyota and non-Toyota cars. It is in goal to offer prospective customers the chance to exchange their old car of any manufacturer in lieu of a brand new Toyota, which may come with quality Toyota car cover.

The unit will also cater customers who would like to exchange their cars for competitively priced used Toyota cars.

Finance option is included in the value added services the unit offers at the ‘Toyota U Trust’ outlets.

Since India’s used car segment is largely unorganized, car companies felt the need to take initiatives for the matte. It is mainly to spur along new car sales and eventually enhance customer loyalty.

Toyota is entering the segment to offer choice, convenience and transparency, which allow customers to make an informed buy or sale.

As part of the service, the unit will also provide certifications for the Toyota vehicles sold through ‘Toyota U Trust’ outlets. There will also be warranty included along with it, covering one year or 15,000 kms. Customers will also be granted with up to three labour free services at Toyota dealerships. Warranty will be covering the engine and gearbox/driveline of all certified Toyota cars.

M Kawabata, TKM’s deputy managing director, estimated the used car market in India as “almost as big as the new car market”. He called it “important even for the growth of new car segments”. The company is considering approximately 10 to 15 per cent of new car business to be routed through the ‘Toyota U Trust’ initiative.

At present, ‘Toyota U Trust’ is available in Chennai and Bangalore. The company plans to extend it to metros and other cities within the next whole year.

‘Most Reliable Car”: a Toyota

Prior to getting a quality BMW light bulb online, let me first give you an update regarding Toyota…

A recent survey showed that a British-built Japanese car is the most reliable. A reliability table compiled by What Car? magazine and the Warranty Direct company was topped by Toyota Corolla models, manufactured at Burnaston, Derbyshire, from 2000 to 2002.

In the survey, Corolla only had three faults per 100 models. But, Honda, taking six cars in places, has dominated the top 10. The second-placed car, which happens to be the Swindon-built Honda CR-V (1997-2002), had five faults in 100 models. Other Honda cars included in the top were the Swindon-built Accord (1999-2003) and the Swindon-built Civic (2001-05). Honda also topped the manufacturers’ league for reliability, where Toyota placed second, while Subaru got the third spot.

The least reliable vehicles in the survey included the Alfa Romeo GTV (1996-2003) the most with 97 faults per 100 models, Renault Espace (1997-2002) the second with 77 faults and the Jaguar XK8 (1996-2006) the third with 62 faults.

Talking about the manufacturers, the least reliable were Land Rover, Renault and Alfa Romeo.

The survey has involved an analysis of data from 26 manufacturers, 133 different models, and 35,000 vehicles. The average age of the cars in the survey was 4.9 years.

According to What Car? Group Editor Steve Fowler, “The annual reliability study is a thorough and helpful guide that provides important data for buyers of new and use cars. British workers should also be proud that their products have done as well.”

On the other hand, Warranty Direct Managing Director McClure Fisher said, “The data proves that expensive doesn’t necessarily mean reliable. The more mechanically and electronically-complicated a vehicle, especially if it’s of European origin, the more likely you are to suffer problems.”

Anyways, I’m proud that Toyota has topped such kind of survey. It is another proof that Toyota is a great automaker.
